Jawahar Vidyarthi Gruha to Get Major Makeover: 90-Year-Old Hostel to Rise as a 12-Storey Complex, Project Estimated at Rs 170 Crore
New facility to house 240 boys and 240 girls in separate towers; e-library, study rooms, community hall and canteen among modern amenities planned
NAGPUR: In a significant development for the city's student community, the 90-year-old Jawahar Vidyarthi Gruha, located in the heart of Civil Lines, is all set to be completely redeveloped as a state-of-the-art, 12-storey mixed-gender hostel complex, featuring separate buildings designated exclusively for boys and girls. The ambitious redevelopment project, once completed, is expected to have a total construction area of approximately 2,201 square metres and is estimated to cost around Rs 170 crore.
Speaking to newspersons here on Wednesday, Shekhar Sawarbandhe, president of the Jawahar Vidyarthi Gruha Society, provided detailed insights into the upcoming project. He informed reporters that the newly constructed facility will have the capacity to comfortably accommodate a total of 240 boys and 240 girls, housed in their respective, separate towers within the same sprawling complex.
According to Sawarbandhe, the proposed hostel buildings will be thoughtfully equipped with a range of modern facilities designed to enhance the overall living and academic experience of the students. These planned amenities include a fully functional e-library, dedicated study rooms for focused academic work, a spacious community hall for social and cultural gatherings, as well as a well-equipped canteen to cater to the daily needs of the residents. In addition to these student-centric facilities, the redeveloped complex will also house a dedicated administrative office to oversee the day-to-day functioning of the institution.
Providing further historical context about the institution, Gangadhar Kachore, chief executive of the society, informed that Jawahar Vidyarthi Gruha has been continuously operating and serving students since as far back as 1935, making it one of the city's oldest and most respected student welfare institutions. He added that the society, which is currently spread across a substantial 2.36 acres of land, presently runs both a functional hostel as well as a library for the benefit of students.
Meanwhile, vice-president Narendra Diwate revealed that the detailed project report (DPR) prepared for this ambitious redevelopment has already been formally submitted to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. This submission was made through the district guardian minister, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who is expected to play a key role in facilitating the necessary approvals for the project. Diwate further disclosed that the entire redevelopment project will be executed and developed by the well-known architectural firm, Bhivgade and Associates, which has been entrusted with the responsibility of designing this modern facility.
Addressing queries regarding the admission process for the new hostels once construction is complete, officials clarified that admissions will be carried out strictly in accordance with the applicable government guidelines, ensuring a fair and transparent process for all prospective students. The press conference, held to formally announce this major redevelopment initiative, was also attended by several other prominent trustees of the society, including Anil Sakharkar, Sukhdev Wanjari, Krishna Ghugugskar, and Nandkishore Thote, among others.
