    समाजजीवनात व राष्ट्रजीवनात काही आदर्श हे एैतिहासिक व आदर्शवत असतात. अनेक पिढ्या त्यापासून प्रेरणा घेतात एवढेच नव्हे तर ते इतिहासाचे साक्षीदार असता. यातील ज्या व्यक्तिंमुळे हा इतिहास घडतो त्या व्यक्ती आदराचा विषय बनतात तेली समाजाच्या उत्कर्षासाठी झटणारी मुंबईची शनेश्‍वर फाऊंडेशन ही संस्था समाजआदरास विषय बनली आहे. त्या संस्थेच्या व्यक्ति म्हणजे तेल्यांचे बाबा आमटे बनले असे म्हंटले तर वावगे होऊ नये.  असे काय आहे. या संस्थेच्या कार्याबाबत ? त्या कार्यापासुन तुम्ही  आम्ही  काय बोध घेणार ? प्रगतिच्या अनेकं योजने दुर असलेल्या तेली समाजाला अशा संस्थांचे कार्य दिशा देणारे ठरले. अशा अनेक संस्थांच्या उभारणीने प्रगत समाजाच्या समान पातळीवर नेण्यास मदत होईल.

इतिहास घडवीणारा तेली स माज व भवानी मातोचा पलंग  ( भाग 2 ) 

    नगर जवळच्या बुर्‍हानगर येथे भवानी मातेचे मंदिर आहे. या मंदिरातून निघालेल्या पालखीत भवानी माता तुळजापूर येथे शिलांगनच्या उल्सवात बसलेली आसते.  हा मान भगत घराण्याला शेकडो वर्ष मिळतआहे. पुराणात नुसती वांगी आसतात अशी एक म्हण आहे. इतिहासाचार्य राजवाडे आपल्या संशोधनात म्हणतात व्यास हा एक अतीबुद्धीमान माणुस होता. त्याने त्या वेळच्या कथा, त्या वेळच्या दंतकथा, त्यावेळच्या लोककथा, या पिढी पासुन त्या पिढीकडे हस्तांतरीत झालेल्या कथा. संग्रहीत केल्या आणी त्यांना आपल्या विचार प्रणाली प्रमाणे, बदलत्या काळा प्रमाणे आकार देऊन लेखन केले. आणी यांच ग्रंथावर उभा देश व्यापला याचा आर्थ एकच व्यासानी त्यातून हवे ते बाजुला सारून आपली हुकमत निर्माण केली.

        Kannagi devi ( कण्णगि देवी ) is a legendary Tamil teli samaj (cast, community) vaishya woman who forms the central character of the Tamil epic Silapathikaram (100-300 CE). The story relates how Kannagi took revenge on the Pandyan King of Madurai, who had wrongfully put her husband to death, by cursing the city. Kannagi devi is from Vaniya chettiar Community.  

        Kovalan, the son of a wealthy teli merchant in Kaveripattinam, married Kannagi, a young woman of legendary beauty. They lived together happily in the city of Kaveripattinam, until Kovalan met the dancer Madhavi and fell in love with her. In his infatuation he forgot Kannagi and gradually spent all his wealth on the dancer. At last, penniless, Kovalan realised his mistake, and returned back to Kannagi. Their only asset was a precious pair of anklets (Chilambu - hence the name of the epic), filled with gems, which she gave to him willingly. With these as their capital they went to the city of Madurai, where Kovalan hoped to recoup his fortunes by trade.

   This community of oil extractors is known by different names in different States in India. They are known as Ganiga in Karnataka, Gandla (deva gandla, sajjana gandla), in A.P; as Vaniya Chettiar or Vaaniga vysya in Tamil Nadu ; as Teli in Maharashtra and in North India. All Ganigas does not come under Shudras: Ganigas (Jyothi Nagaras) in Karnataka, Andhra, Tamil Nadu have Rushi Gothram and can be considered as Vaishyas. They wear Janivar the sacred thread and are eligible for recitation of Gayathri and have rituals of Vysyas and Brahmins.
